STATESBORO, Ga. – Senior Ebony Carter was selected as the Georgia Southern Track & Field Most Valuable Performer for the 2012-13 Indoor and Outdoor seasons and Alyssa Felton was named the Freshman of the Year at the Eagles' annual banquet. Head Coach Marlo Mincey and the Eagles honored their seniors with plaques and presented the letterwinners with their awards the evening of Thursday, May 2nd.
"It was hard to choose one individual for the MVP award because certainly we wouldn't have had the success we had this year without everyone contributing," said Georgia Southern Head Track & Field/Cross Country coach Marlo Mincey. "For our freshman award, Alyssa won an individual conference title in indoor and was part of our championship outdoor 4X100m Relay team, capping off a solid year. "
Carter earned four All-Southern Conference honors for her top-three finishes in both the 100m and 200m Dash events for both indoor and outdoor season. She was also a member of the Eagles' Southern Conference champion 4X100m Relay team (outdoor) and with her teammates, set the facility record for that event with a 45.46. That time was just one hundredth of a second from tying the Southern Conference outdoor record.
Another member of the outdoor championship 4X100m Relay team, Felton won the Long Jump title at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships in February and also earned All-Freshman honors for her efforts in the 60m and 100m Dash events. She added to her awards list at the end of the outdoor season with All-Freshman honors in the Long Jump, 100m and 200m Dash.
Coach Mincey spoke about each one of the seniors Jasmine Billings, Carter, Sara Curry, Alexandra Langmo, Amanda Tennyson and Amber Vaughn. Each said brief farewells and made comments about their time as Eagle student-athletes at the end of the dinner.
Georgia Southern's 4X100m Relay team, which includes Carter, Felton, lead leg Jasmin Walker and anchor Vaughn, continues competition in an effort to improve upon its 45.44 time and move up in the rankings. The top 24 4X100m Relay teams in the NCAA East Division are eligible for the NCAA preliminaries later this month.
