Rings and Diplomas: Georgia Southern Student-Athletes Earn Valuable Degrees

STATESBORO, Ga. – Surrounded by teammates, coaches, family, friends and a full house at Allen E. Paulson Stadium, Georgia Southern student-athletes were among those who graduated in the Class of 2013 Saturday, May 11th. More than 40 Eagle student-athletes were eligible to participate in the 85th-annual spring undergraduate Commencement ceremony while several other Eagles earned graduate degrees on Friday.
In his second term as Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Georgia Southern alum Luis Aguilar delivered the Commencement address to the nearly 2,500 soon-to-be graduates and audience of 20,000 plus, reminding them to “turn challenges into opportunities.” President Brooks Keel, on behalf of Georgia Southern University and the University System of Georgia presented Aguilar with an honorary doctoral degree, the Doctor of Public Service, for his decades of service on various state and national boards.
Commencement completes the University’s academic calendar year for 2012-13, but Eagle Softball, Baseball and Golf continue this week. Georgia Southern Softball today won its second-straight Southern Conference title and finds out Sunday night, May 12th, its NCAA destination. Georgia Southern Baseball closes the regular season at College of Charleston with three games Thursday-Sunday, May 16-18, after this weekend’s non-conference series at Clemson. Eagle Golf heads to the NCAA Regionals in Columbus, Ohio, next week and the 4X100m Relay team, representing Georgia Southern Track & Field, will find out if it qualified for NCAA preliminaries.
