STATESBORO, Ga. – Winner of the 2012 Erk Russell Award and Georgia Southern's leading tackler last season, John Stevenson, has been invited to return for the N.Y. Giants rookie camp. Stevenson, who played linebacker for the Eagles, participated in the weekend's practices as a safety . Stevenson had a pick during practice Friday, intercepting Giants' rookie Ryan Nassib.
The Stone Mountain, Ga. native posted 103 tackles during the 2012 season, only the third time an individual had eclipsed the 100-tackle standard in the last 10 seasons. Stevenson also tied for the team lead with two fumble recoveries. He added three tackles for loss and had five passes broken up.
Stephenson saw action on the field all four years as an Eagle, winning four letters and starting all 14 games at linebacker his final season. He posted a career-best 12 tackles in three games and had possibly one of the top defensive plays of the year when he stripped an Elon receiver of a caught pass to help secure the win over the Phoenix last September.
"It's not about how you start, it's about how you finish," said Stevenson in an interview after being selected by the Eagle coaching staff as the Erk Russell Award winner. "You can do anything you set your mind to, just work hard, do the right thing and put your faith in the right place, and it can definitely happen."
