STATESBORO, Ga. – The 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships begin in just a few days with Georgia Southern playing host to the two-day event April 20-21. Twenty teams join the Eagles in Statesboro this weekend for the 89th annual event for the men and 27th annual for the women. Georgia Southern participates in this championship for the 14th time since the Eagle Track and Field program was started in 1999. This weekend marks the third time the event has been held in Statesboro.
Admission is free all weekend with competition beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday. A full schedule is available here with a live results link posted on Friday to let fans keep up with the action. Updates will also be provided on twitter @GSAthletics and @SoConSports.
3:41.68 – Georgia Southern's record-setting time in the 4x400m Relay which also still stands as the Southern Conference record. Rashedah Arnold, Nicole Brown, Shauntel Jennings and Carla Ballard won the title, one of seven events won by the Eagles, en route to the SoCon Outdoor team championship in 2007.
8 – Number of removable spikes used in each of Jasmine Billing's Nike "spikes" or shoes when she runs the 100m Hurdles.
11.53 – The winning time by senior Ebony Carter to claim her second-straight 100m Dash outdoor title last year. Named the Most Outstanding Track Performer in 2012, Carter also earned all-conference honors in the 2012 200m Dash and as a member of the 4X100m Relay team.
23 – Number of top-10 SoCon rankings for the Eagles going into the postseason, including the top spot in three events – Long Jump, Discus and the 4X100m Relay. Georgia Southern has four representatives in the 100m and 200m Dash and the Long Jump.
45.23m – Distance thrown by junior Aishya Wofford in the Discus event in only her second collegiate meet, good for second on Georgia Southern's all-time list. The discus, which weighs 1 kilogram or 2.2 pounds, traveled 148 feet, five inches. The Eagle record is 153 feet.
58.80 – Record time in the 400m Hurdles by Marlo Mincey in 2004, her senior season at Georgia Southern. Both her 400m Hurdles and 400m Dash time (55.09) would rank at the top of the current SoCon standings. Mincey is the first Southern Conference Track & Field student-athlete to return as a head coach in the league.
180 – Approximate number of footfalls or steps taken by sophomore Kimberly Thomas in her 400m Dash, which dictates the tempo of her race.
2,000 – In addition to the actual Mondo track surface, the sand pits will be well-used this weekend as the landing space for the Long Jump and Triple Jump for individual events and as part of the Heptathlon and Decathlon. Approximately 2,000 pounds of sand fills the each pit with additional sand nearby to be added when needed.
4,987 – The point total of Georgia Southern's Kellie Mitchell when she won the Heptathlon in 2004. The Eagles have three wins in this event in their history, the most recent by Shaunta Hamilton in 2010. Mitchell also won the inaugural SoCon indoor multi-event, the Pentathlon, in 2004.
9,000 miles – Senior distance runner Sara Curry, who also won four letters in Cross Country, has run 9,000 miles during her four years as an Eagle student-athlete. Curry averages about 50 miles per week and goes through a pair of running shoes about every three months.
