Eagles Face Fierce Competition in First Day at FSU Relays

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Quality competition in the first day at the FSU Relays pushed the Georgia Southern Track and Field team to some of its best performances of the season Friday. Freshman Kelsey Chandler had the highest finish of the day at fifth in the Discus, finishing just shy of her personal best. Freshman Alyssa Felton posted the top mark for the Eagles so far this 2013 outdoor season in the Long Jump and placed seventh (5.74m/18’10”) in the event.

Jasmin Walker put up her first effort of the outdoor season in the Long Jump with a 5.46m (17’11”) and then led the Eagles’ 4X100m Relay team Friday. Walker finished ninth behind Felton in the Long Jump as they faced competition from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East, Mid-Eastern and Conference USA.
Coach Mincey kept the lineup for the 4X100m Relay the same this weekend with Walker and seniors Ebony Carter, Jasmine Billings and Amber Vaughn. The Eagles were .29 seconds behind Marshall and .22 behind Virginia Tech in the first running event of this weekend’s meet.
Running into the wind in the top heat for the 100m Hurdles, Jasmine Billings still recorded her best time of the 2013 outdoor season with the highest finish for Georgia Southern at 11th. Lauren Toomer and Ashleigh Rasheed also posted their best times so far this year.
All three Eagles who raced in the 400m Dash, Kimberly Thomas, Tiffany White and Aliya Parker improved upon their times this season. Tiffany White made the biggest jump, taking.26 seconds off her previous season best. Thomas reduced her time by .07 seconds and captured a top-25 finish.
In one of the last events of the day, Sara Curry ran to a top-15 finish in the 5,000m. Aishya Wofford was just behind Chandler in the Discus, finishing sixth, while Alexis Jacobs added 5.97m to her previous best this season in this event.
