STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Track & Field team returns to the FSU Relays this weekend with the goal of improving times and finishes from a year ago while building toward next month’s Southern Conference championships. The 34th annual meet in Tallahassee attracts some of the nation’s top competitors and traditionally Georgia Southern has recorded some of the program’s top performances at the Mike Long Track. The FSU Relays get underway at 9 a.m. Friday, March 22nd, and run through the evening of Saturday, March 23rd.
The Field events begin with the Hammer at 9 a.m. Friday at the Lake Bradford cage followed by the Long Jump at 12 p.m. The Women’s 4X100m Relay is the opening race at 1 p.m. Live streaming of this weekend’s meet is available here: http://www.distancepreps.com/gprofile.php?do=videos&mgroup_id=31488&video_id=82520.
“I really like this track, I always like to bring our team back there, and this is a chance for us to face a lot of good competition,” said Eagle Head Coach Marlo Mincey about the Eagles second-straight trip to the FSU Relays. “Our team is very confident right now the schedule at Florida State allows us to get a lot of good quality races in. We are consistently training going into this meet and we want to make sure we stay mentally focused in everything we do. Outdoor season is so short, this is one of the last three meets before our conference championship and everything we do is getting us tuned up for postseason.”
This is the first of three weekends in the Sunshine State for the Eagles with the North Florida Invitational and Pepsi Florida Relays on deck. After a week away from competition, Georgia Southern plays host to the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships April 20-21.
Georgia Southern will travel 23 student-athletes to compete in 17 events over the two-day meet in Tallahassee. Strong in the sprint events, eight Eagles are slated to compete in the 200m Dash with five set in the 100m event led by senior Ebony Carter in both. Winner of both the 100 and 400m Hurdle events last weekend, Dana Edwards heads up the list of five GSU competitors in the 100m event Friday with three entered for the 400m event Saturday.
Freshman Jami Joyner, coming off her best performance in the 800m at the Georgia Southern Invitational last weekend, prepares for that race and the 1,500m as well. Senior Sara Curry races in the 5,000m event on Friday.
Representing the Eagles in three throwing events, Kelsey Chandler and Alexis Jacobs will compete in Discus, Hammer and Shot Put. Brianna Charles rounds out the entries in the Hammer while Aishya Wofford appears in her second collegiate outdoor meet in the Discus and Javelin while adding the Shot Put this weekend. In addition to entries in the High Jump and Triple Jump, Ashleigh Rasheed and Taylor Johnson will also throw the Javelin.
Alyssa Felton and Jasmin Walker return to competition Friday in the Long Jump while Charles looks to improve in that event. Keyanna Harris owns the top mark in the High Jump with her sights set on a personal best.
The Eagles dominated the Georgia Southern Invitational last Friday at their home track as they captured top finishes in 10 individual and both relay events. Wofford set a facility record in the Discus and Chandler posted a top-five performance and personal best in the Hammer to highlight the day. In the running events, the top three season times were replaced in both the 100 and 200m Dash with five other individual efforts moving to the top of the 2012-13 chart.
