STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern put forth solid efforts in the Field events at the UNF Spring Break Invite Friday as Kelsey Chandler posted the Eagles’ top finish of the day in the Discus. Chandler threw for 39.05m (128’01”) for fourth place with a distance that would have put her in position to score points in the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship meet last spring.
“I was excited about our efforts in that we had a few individuals make it back it into finals and we opened up some personal records in the first meet,” said Georgia Southern Head Track Coach Marlo Mincey. “We can’t ask for too much more for that this early in the season, so we’re really happy.”
Freshman Taylor Johnson’s first effort in the Shot Put was her best with a distance of 10.15m (33’3.75”) for a finish just outside the top 10. Junior Brianna Charles started her 2013 outdoor season in the Long Jump matching her best mark of 2012 with a 5.30m (17’04.75, 1.8 wind). She finished in sixth place just ahead of freshman Ashleigh Rasheed at 5.26m (17’03.25, .5 wind) for seventh.
Entries were set this weekend to place Eagles in different events as individuals, for the most part, ran in longer distance races than their normal routines.
Lauren Toomer and Rasheed, in the first 100m Hurdles race of their collegiate careers, placed sixth and ninth, respectively. Jasmine Walker finished ninth in the 400m Dash with Ebony Carter missing the cutoff for the top 10 in that event by .46 seconds. Kimberly Thomas and Cherrelle King ran in their first-ever 800m events and posted times that would challenge for spots in the top 10 on the Eagles’ 2012 outdoor performance list.
Events scheduled for the second day of the UNF Spring Break Invite begin at 9 a.m. with the Women’s Hammer and High Jump. Running events begin for the Eagles at 10:45 a.m. with the 200m Dash. The final event of the day is the 4X400m Relay. Live results will be updated at http://www.halfmiletiming.com/.
