INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Georgia Southern All-American J.J. Wilcox lands in Indianapolis today to begin his four-day audition for arguably some of the world's most selective recruiters. Wilcox earned an invitation to the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine after a solid collegiate career and impressive showing at last month's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. He will undergo the battery of comprehensive physical, mental and psychological screenings this week, and will be part of the first class to take the NFL's new Players Assessment Test this year.
"I am appreciative and know I am blessed," said J.J. Wilcox prior to his departure for Indianapolis. "Getting to this point is so exciting and challenging, but I did not get here by myself. I have great faith, and I been surrounded by great people, my family, my community, my coaches, and my friends and teammates. I want to do the very best I can to represent Georgia Southern."
Most of Wilcox's day Saturday will be spent getting a physical exam and then will follow with additional testing Sunday and Monday before the defensive backs are scheduled for center stage Tuesday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The NFL Network begins its coverage of the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine today and continues through the final workout. Additional multimedia coverage is available at http://www.nfl.com/combine.
NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah wrote that Wilcox was "one of the winners of Senior Bowl Week," while Senior Bowl Executive Director Phil Savage reiterated his pick of Wilcox as the best safety for the South. Savage told al.com, that (Wilcox) may have the highest ceiling of all the South safety prospects."
"We are thrilled for J.J. and for the opportunity he has to participate at the most elite sports combine in the world," said Eagle Head Coach Jeff Monken. "He is among the best football players in the nation and to have him represent Georgia Southern at that venue is something very special. We wish him the best and we'll be watching him every step of the way."
From Cairo, Ga., Wilcox spent his first three years on the offensive side of the ball, playing at slotback during the Eagles' first two runs to the NCAA FCS Semifinals in 2010 and 2011. He willingly moved to defense back, and also returned kicks his senior season, helping Georgia Southern, in a different way, reach the semifinals for the third straight time in 2012.
"I just remember watching the combine with my friends on TV last year, thinking about being there one day, and now I'm actually going to be there," Wilcox said.
