STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Track & Field team departs for Winston-Salem, N.C., Friday with the Southern Conference Indoor Championships set to begin the next day, Saturday, February 23rd. Seventeen events will be contested over two days with six finals contested on the first day and the remaining 11 on Sunday. Live results from the SoCon championships will be available at: http://timinginc.com.
Leading the Eagles to their 14th SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championship is Head Coach Marlo Mincey, a 2004 Georgia Southern alum, who is the first Southern Conference Track & Field student-athlete to return as head coach of a program in the league. With a dozen all-conference honors to her credit in both the indoor and outdoor championships, Mincey captured the indoor 400m Dash individual crown in 2004 and was a member of the 4X400m Relay team that won the event in 2003 in a University-record setting time.
“When you have been a part of building something, you are more personally invested in its success and I know with the enthusiasm and pride I have for this program, and my intensity, we can bring it to another level,” said Coach Marlo Mincey. “I really feel that championships are an opportunity to start over and have a clean slate. If you are ranked number one, you have a target on your back, and I know how that feels. If you aren’t number one, it’s time to recreate what you have done in the past or create something better.”
Georgia Southern has had a hold on third place in the league championships with Appalachian State winning 10 titles and Western Carolina two since the Eagle program first participated in its first year as a varsity program in 2000. Individual event champions Jasmine Billings (60m Hurdles), Ebony Carter (60m Dash) and Jasmine Walker (Long Jump) will look to defend their 2012 titles this weekend while Georgia Southern’s traditional strengths in sprints and field events should add to the team point total.
While this will be the first time the SoCon Championships have been held at the JDL Fast Track facility, this is the second trip for Georgia Southern to Winston-Salem this year. The Eagles traveled to the JDL Fast Track for the Hilton Garden Innvitational at the beginning of February, facing competitors from Appalachian State, UNCG, Western Carolina and The Citadel.
Of the 25 Eagles scheduled to participate this weekend, 13 will be making their first-ever championship appearances. Included in that list is freshman Alyssa Felton, who ranks in the SoCon’s top 10 in all three of her events, tied for second in the Long Jump (5.69m, 18’8”), sixth in the 60m (7.80) and tied for sixth in the 200m (25.62). Keyanna Harris enters the weekend with the fifth-best High Jump in the SoCon and the Eagles’ season-best mark at 1.65m (5’5”).
