STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Athletics is honoring the roots of Georgia Southern University and the first football teams with a special uniform on Saturday.
The uniform is a throwback to the Georgia Teacher's College football teams, which took to the field from 1924-1941. The uniform consists of a blue and gray rugby-style jersey, gray pants and blue and gray striped socks. This was the uniform design worn by Teacher's College when they began play as the first Georgia Southern Football team.
"We wanted a way to honor the beginnings of this University as well as our football team as we make the journey to the FBS and the Sun Belt Conference, and this special jersey will allow us to do so," said Athletics Director Tom Kleinlein.
Georgia Southern has always been known as having traditional jerseys, and the standard home and away look has not changed since Erk Russell led the team back onto the field in 1982. The classic solid blue top and white pants along with a blue helmet with numbers on the side has seen six FCS National Championships, legendary coaches Russell and Paul Johnson and legendary players Tracy Ham and Adrian Peterson, but for Homecoming 2013 the Teacher's College uniform will return to the field one last time.
Fans can purchase a replica jersey at the University Bookstore starting on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and are encouraged to be a part of the Georgia Teacher's College and Homecoming celebrations on Nov. 9.
Georgia Southern Athletics provides up-to-date information on all its sports through its official website, GSEagles.com, through social media channels facebook.com/GSAthletics and twitter.com/GSAthletics, and its "Eagles GATA" mobile app for Android and iOS.
