Four Eagles named to league’s offense and defense second teams
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Four Eagles were selected for the Southern Conference Media Association's offensive honors with seniors Dorian Byrd and Jerick McKinnon earning spots on the first team. Byrd finishes his Georgia Southern career with four years of SoCon honors, the last two as a first-team pick on both the Coaches and Media Association's lists. The SoCon's individual rushing leader, McKinnon averaged 105.0 yards per game and eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark with 125 and the winning touchdown in the Eagles' upset of Florida Saturday.
Repeat selections from the SoCon Coaches second team offense, junior tackle Garrett Frye and junior center Manrey Saint-Amour both earned their first honors from the SoCon Media Association. Byrd, Frye and Saint-Amour helped the Eagles to a Division I best 353.5 team rushing yards per game in 2013 with seven games of 400 or more yards of total offense.
Junior safety Deion Stanley and senior cornerback Lavelle Westbrooks earned spots on the SoCon second team defense, representing the Eagles with two honorees at the defensive back position for the second-straight year. Westbrooks led the league in passes defended per game with nine total on the year while Stanley, an all-freshman pick in 2011, ranked atop the SoCon interceptions list.
Georgia Southern completed its first year of transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision and final year in the Southern Conference in 2013. The Eagles begin their affiliation in 2014 with the Sun Belt Conference after accepting an invitation to join the league in March of this year.
