ELON, N.C.- Georgia Southern men's tennis traveled north this weekend for the Elon Invitational, taking on players from James Madison, Georgia State, Tennessee Tech, UNCG, UNC Asheville, Winthrop, N.C. Central, USC Upstate, North Carolina Wesleyan, and Bluefield College.
"We showed some progress this weekend in our matches, starting to put more pieces together from our fall training," said head coach Nick Zieziula. "We still have a lot of work ahead to get to where we want to be in the spring but I have confidence in this group working through our obstacles and achieving great things. Christian put together a solid weekend knocking off two SoCon opponents en route to the finals and doing a great job of battling through his matches regardless of whether things were going his way or not."
In singles play, Christian Kerrigan was able to bring home some W's beating players from JMU, UNCG, and Elon, making it to the finals of his flight. Kerrigan was defeated by Yates of USC Upstate in the final 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4.
Marco Osorio was defeated in the first round of the top singles flight by Chevallier (Georgia State) 6-1, 6-1. Nico DeGroof beat NC Wesleyan's Konnov in the first round, then was defeated by Branth (JMU) 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-1. Kyle Hoffman came out on top in the first round, winning against Kitchen of Bluefield College 6-0, 6-0. Hoffman continued on to the second round, but lost to Smith (UNCG) 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles play, partners Marco Osorio and Nico De Groof lost in the first round to Dougherty/Mack (UNCG) 8-3, but then turned it around and won against Estaban/Eremmev (Tenn. Tech) 8-3. Kyle Hoffman and Christian Kerrigan tallied a victory versus Hviid/Tolhurst (NC Wes.) 8-6 in the first round, then suffered a loss against Sablik/Humpherys (Elon) 8-2. Hoffman/Kerrigan played off for third place but lost to Konnov/Glumov (NC Wes.) 8-5.
The Eagles are finished with fall season play, but pick up competition again starting January 11th at Georgia Tech.
