STATESBORO, Ga. - Afternoon thunderstorms continue to be the story of Fall Camp.
The Georgia Southern Eagles returned to practice Thursday, a day after severe weather forced the team to cancel their scheduled off day, but were only able to complete one of the schedule two practices.
The team went to work in full pads this morning and practiced nearly half of the session in sunshine. After lunch and position meetings, Georgia Southern was all set to return to the practice fields in shells when lightning strikes in the area put everything on hold.
Freshman athlete Nardo Govan, who continues to try to find a position to make an impact, moved to the offensive side of the ball during the morning session. A high school safety and running back, Govan made the request yesterday to try B-Back after starting camp as a defensive end.
Georgia Southern will remain on the banks of "Beautiful Eagle Creek" Friday before heading to Paulson Stadium Saturday morning. The Eagles will practice at 9 a.m. and 4:33 p.m. tomorrow.
The Eagles open the 2012 season at home against Jacksonville. Season tickets remain on sale through the Athletic Ticket Office.
Phil Steele Releases Poll, All-American Teams
Phil Steele's FCS Preview Magazine has hit the stands, and Georgia Southern is represented in both the Preseason Top-40 Poll and Preseason All-American Teams.
After an 11-3 season and a Southern Conference Championship, the Eagles were selected 10th in the preseason poll. GSU was ranked behind fellow SoCon member #5 Wofford and ahead of #16 Appalachian State.
On the All-American squads, defensive tackle Brent Russell was selected to the first team, while B-Back Dominique Swope was a second team honoree.
Along with offensive tackle Dorian Byrd, Russell was a First Team Preseason All-SoCon selection. Swope joined linebacker Darius Eubanks and safety Deion Stanley on the second team.
Meet the Eagles Set for August 18th
The final day of Fall Camp will serve host to the annual Meet the Eagles event. The Georgia Southern Football, Volleyball and Men's and Women's Soccer teams will sign autographs at Paulson Stadium starting at 9 a.m.
Both GUS and the cheerleaders will be in attendance, and a football scrimmage will follow at 10:30 a.m.
Fans can also pick up the 2012 posters and schedule cards that morning.
