Eagles Shine in Palmetto Classic

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. - Georgia Southern track and field ran a very impressive meet, Friday in Mt. Pleasant. The Eagles took four three place finishes and many more top ten finishes in the Palmetto Classic.
Sara Curry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) placed first in the One Mile run, running a 5:20.14. Following Curry were Megan Sullivan (Huntersville, N.C.) in fourth place, and Asea Mayfield (Marietta, Ga.) in sixth. Sullivan ran 5:35.44 and Mayfield ran 5:38.88 for the Eagles.
Taylor Wade (Loganville, Ga.) ran a 1:03.59 to take first place in the 400 Meter Hurdles. Dana Edwards (Athens, Ga.) placed third (1:05.95), and Lauren Toomer (Tyrone, Ga.) placed seventh (1:10.81) in the event.
The Eagles 4x400 Meter Relay team continued their success on Friday. The team of Kimberly Thomas (Covington, Ga.), Cherrelle King (Elmont, N.Y.), Asea Mayfield and Raquel Daly (Decatur, Ga.) ran a 3:56.10 to win the event. Joining them was another relay team for the Eagles. Dana Edwards, Taylor Wade, Stephanie Hicks (Trenton, N.J.) and Kristiana Towns (Decatur, Ga.) ran a 4:08.04 to place fourth in the event.
In the Hammer Throw, Charnelle Wray (Jamaica, N.Y.) placed third (43.67), Sara Hall (Columbia, Mo.) placed fifth (41.72) and Alexis Jacobs (Columbia, S.C.) came in eleventh tossing a 36.97.
Azura Robillard (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) tossed a 33.50 to take third place in the Javelin Throw. Following Robillard, Jessica Moss (Vero Beach, Fla.) placed fourth (33.07) and Blaine Richards (Alma, Ga.) placed 18th (19.38) in the event.
Jasmine Walker (Fairburn, Ga.) placed second in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.59. Brianna Charles (Lithonia, Ga.) and Stephanie Hicks tied for ninth in the Long Jump. Both jumped a 5.23.
The Eagles' 4x100 Relay team placed third in the event. Jasmine Billings, Ebony Carter (Rome, Ga.), Cherrelle King and Jasmine Walker combined to run 48.16 in the relay.
Dana Edwards took second in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Edwards ran 15.91 to place, as the only Eagle in the event.
The Eagles were all over the 400 Meter Dash on Friday. Kimberly Thomas placed fourth (57.08), Cherrelle King took ninth (59.42), Deanna Edwards placed 16th (1:03.02), JoAnn Jaja Benson placed 20th (1:07.94) and Racquel Daly took 21st (1:09.58) for GSU.
As the only Eagle in the 100 Meter Dash, Jasmine Billings (Lawrenceville, Ga.) placed fourth, sprinting 12.28.
Kristiana Towns set a personal record in the 800 Meter, running 2:18.79 to take fifth. Also in the 800, Talisha Rice (Stockbridge, Ga.) placed sixth, Azura Robillard placed seventh and Amanda Tennyson (Grayson, Ga.) placed eighth. The three ran 2:25.72, 2:27.16 and 2:30.92, respectively.
In the 200 Meter Dash, Kimberley Thomas placed eighth (25.50), Jasmine Walker placed tenth (25.68), Deanna Edwards (Athens, Ga.) placed 14th (26.17), Cherelle King took 15th (26.31), Jasmine Billings placed 19th (27.38) and JoAnn Jaja Benson took 22nd (28.78) for the Eagles.
Sara Curry, Megan Sullivan and Brittani Martin (Alpharetta, Ga.) took second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 500 Meter Run. The three ran 18:26.42, 18:47.32 and 19:04.50, respectively.
Sara Hall threw 37.99 in the Discus to take third, while Alexis Jacobs placed ninth (32.78). Hall also took second in the Shot Put (12.78), followed by Jacobs in fourth (12.54), Charnelle Wray in seventh (11.98), and Stephanie Hicks in 13th (10.16).
The Triple Jump saw Jasmine Walker take seventh and Brianna Charles take tenth, jumping 10.88 and 10.41, respectively. And in the High Jump, Dana Edwards took third (1.45) and Talisha Rice jumped 1.40 to take sixth.
The Eagles will be back in action March 17. GSU will be running in the Black & Gold Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
