Eagles Take Third in SoCon Indoor Championships

Birmingham, Ala. - Georgia Southern Track and Field took third-place in the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday. The Eagles finished with a total of 92 points, behind Western Carolina's 113, and Conference Champion Appalachian State who won with 157.16 points.
"I was really proud of how we were all over the track today," said Head Coach Marlo Mincey. "We had someone scoring in almost every event. I wanted to make sure we're focusing on a wide variety of events while building our program, and show that we are a complete team, and we did that."
After clocking the fastest time in the conference during the season, junior Jasmine Billings (Lawrenceville, Ga.) broke the school record in the 60 Meter Hurdles on her way to taking first place finish in the event. Billings' 8.49 was a mere tenth of a second from tying the SoCon record. Sophomore Stephanie Hicks (Trenton, N.J.) came in third clocking in at 8.73 followed by freshman Taylor Wade (Loganville, Ga.) in fifth with a time of 8.89. The Eagles had seen success in the event going into the Indoor Championships, and it showed on Friday.
GSU took another first place finish, when junior Ebony Carter (Rome, Ga.) won the 60 Meter Dash. Carter clocked a 7.56 to seal the win. Jasmine Walker (Fairburn, Ga.) and Jasmine Billings took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event with a 7.77 and 7.81.
Ebony Carter continued her success taking second place in the 200 Meter Dash. The junior finished with a time of 24.70. Millicent Brooks-Millender (Douglasville, Ga.) took fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 11.41.
Cherrelle King placed eighth in the 400 Meter Dash, clocking in with a time of 58.94. Asea Mayfield took sixth in the 800 Meter, running a 2:15.39. And Sarah Hall placed eighth in the Weight Throw, with a score of 14.72.
Jasmine Walker garnered Freshman of the Year and made the All-Freshman Team for the 60 Meter Dash and Long Jump.
That was great for Jasmine, winning Freshman of the Year," said Mincey. "What they saw is not even close to what we know she can do. She struggled with some injuries which set her back, she came back and was not even 100 percent, but was able to show what she can do."
Taylor Wade and Sarah Hall joined Walker on the All-Freshman Team for the 60 Meter Hurdles and the Weight Throw, respectively.
The Eagles made a strong push at the beginning of the day, landing them in first place for part of the day, but were unable to hold the lead.
The Eagles will cherish their success in the championships then, get back to work quickly and prepare for the Outdoor season. They will be back in action March 2-3 in the UNF Spring Break Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida.
