Eagles Flying High After First Day of SoCon Championships

Birmingham, Ala. - Georgia Southern Track and field is out performing its fifth-place ranking going into the Southern Conference Indoor Championships. The Eagles are in third-place with 31 points, trailing only Appalachian State who leads with 52.16, and Western Carolina with 33.
Freshman Jasmine Walker (Fairburn, Ga.) put her stamp on the championships, taking first place in the Long Jump. Walker's first place jump of 5.61/18'5" was one of three Eagle scores in the event. Stephanie Hicks (Trenton, N.J.) took second with a jump of 5.58/18'30.75 and Millicent Brooks-Millender (Douglasville, Ga.) took seventh with 5.22/17'01.50.
The day began with Stephanie Hicks taking third place in the Pentathlon with a score of 3347. Later, Charnelle Wray (Jamaica, N.Y.) set a personal record in the Shot Put, with a throw of 12.57/41'03, which was good for sixth place. Sara Hall (Columbia, Mo.) took seventh with a throwing 12.55/41'02.25, and Alexis Jacobs (Columbia, S.C.) placed ninth with a throw of 12.22/40'01.25.The Eagles also performed very well in the preliminaries, which were also held Thursday.
Ebony Carter (Rome, Ga.) sits in the top spot of the 60 Meter Dash prelims (7.54), followed by Jasmine Walker in second (7.66) and Jasmine Billings (Lawrenceville, Ga.) in seventh (7.75). Billings picked up where she left off taking the top spot in the 60 Meter Hurdles prelims. Joining Billings in the 60 Meter Hurdles is Hicks who sits in a tie for third (8.86), Taylor Wade (Loganville, Ga.) who's in fifth (8.90) and Dana Edwards (Athens, Ga.) in 13th (9.55). Also, Asea Mayfield (Marietta, Ga.) qualified for the 800 Meter final, running a 2:1712 in the prelims.
The events will start back up at 10:15 Friday morning.
