CLEVELAND, Ohio - For the second straight year, junior nose tackle Brent Russell was selected as a preseason first-team All-American, listed in the 2011 edition of Phil Steele's College Football Preview. The Comer, Ga., native earned several All-America honors in 2010 and was a Buck Buchanan Award finalist. The media organization released their All-America and Southern Conference picks today, July 20th.
Thirteen members of the Georgia Southern Football team were selected for first and second-team Southern Conference honors in the magazine with eight first-team selections, including five on defense.
Senior defensive tackle Roderick Tinsley (Soperton, Ga.), junior linebacker Josh Rowe (Opelika, Ala.) and senior defensive back Laron Scott (Warner Robins, Ga.) joined Russell on the SoCon first team defensive unit. Offensive tackle Brett Moore (Warner Robins, Ga.), was selected not only for the first-team SoCon offense, but tapped for the publication's second-team All-America offense.
In addition to his recognition as a first-team SoCon selection at defensive back, Scott was listed as a third-team All-America choice at that position. Scott appears three times on the Phil Steele publication's honors list with a first-team SoCon selection for his role as kick returner. Placekicker Adrian Mora (Dalton, Ga.) and punter Charlie Edwards (Tifton, Ga.) give the Eagles the majority of the selections on the special teams first-team All-SoCon list.
Offensive linemen William Maxwell (Quitman, Ga.) and Dorian Byrd (Macon, Ga.) appear on the second-team All-SoCon offense with running back Robert Brown (Macon, Ga.) and J.J. Wilcox (Cairo, Ga.). Senior Derek Heyden (Atlanta, Ga.) represents the Eagles on the second-team defense for the league.
For the first time, Phil Steele's College Football Preview will publish as a stand-alone magazine with 240 pages devoted to the Football Championship Subdivision. It will be available on newsstands on August 10th.
