STATESBORO, Ga. - Thirty years ago, on May 23rd, 1981, Georgia Southern announced the hiring of Erskine "Erk" Russell as head coach of the Eagle Football team. The program, dormant since 1941, was restored after a 40-year absence.
Russell, the longtime defensive coordinator at Georgia, would guide the Eagles to three national championships, including a perfect 15-0 season in 1989. His final coaching record was a remarkable 83-22-1, securing his place as one of America's most exciting and successful college football coaches.
