STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern's Athletics teams posted their highest composite grade point average in department history with a 2.93 GPA for the Spring 2011 semester and a 2.88 for the 2010-2011 academic year. The Eagle men's teams tied their highest single-semester GPA, earning a 2.78 for Spring 2011 to match their previous best GPA from the Spring of 2009.
All 15 sports teams were represented among the list of 174 student-athletes who earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Twenty-three individuals achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs for President's List honors with 61 taking Dean's List honors (3.5 GPA or higher) for the recently completed Spring 2011 semester.
Leading the way for the department, the Georgia Southern Volleyball Eagles earned a 3.46 team GPA. That GPA was the highest single-semester mark for the program and its 3.37 GPA for the 2010-2011 academic year was not only a program best, but tied the Men's Tennis team for the top GPA in the department. Eight members of the 2010 Southern Conference volleyball championship team were named to the Dean's List with GPAs of 3.5 or better and three were named to the President's List for 4.0 GPAs for Spring 2011.
Women's Basketball, Football, Men's Tennis, and Swimming and Diving also had three student-athletes each on the President's 4.0 List. Two student-athletes each from the Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Cross Country/Track & Field and Women's Tennis programs also earned 4.0 GPAs.
The Eagle Football team recorded a program-best 2.65 for the Spring 2011 semester and best-ever 2.53 team GPA for the 2010-2011 academic year.
Georgia Southern student-athletes must be enrolled full-time with a minimum of 12 credit hours during the course of a semester as a requirement of their participation. The GPAs comparisons are based on semester grades since Georgia Southern converted from the quarter system following the 1997-98 academic year.
