GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern's 4X100 Relay team recorded its best time of the 2011 season with a 46.93 time at the Florida Relays, taking .23 seconds off its previous best time of 47.16. The quartet of Jasmine Billings (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Ebony Carter (Rome, Ga.), Amber Vaughn (Macon, Ga.) and Kwajelin Holsendolph (Hinesville, Ga.) ran a sub-47 second mark in the event for Georgia Southern for the first time since the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Championship meet.
Georgia Southern was one of more than 35 women's track and field programs represented at the event and sent 15 members of the team to this highly competitive meet. Five Eagle relay teams and two individuals qualified to compete against some of the nation's top programs.
In the 4X100 meter Shuttle Hurdle Relay, Georgia Southern finished eighth in the event with a time just under a minute at 59.95. Billings ran the first 200 meter leg of the 1600 Sprint Medley Relay with Cherelle King (Elmont, N.Y.) taking the second 200 meter leg. Ray Toomer (Savannah, Ga.) and Asea Mayfield (Marietta, Ga.) finished with the 400 and 800 meter legs of the race, respectively. The Eagles finished with a time of 4:08.72 for 19th place.
The Eagle team of Azura Robillard (Altamonte Springs, Fla.), Racquel Daly (Decatur, Ga.), Morgan Jefferson (Villa Rica, Ga.) and Asea Mayfield (Marietta, Ga.) took eighth place overall (9:25.13) in the 4X800 Relay. The 4X400 Relay team posted a time of 3:56.75, just .12 seconds off its performance at the UCF Invitational last week.
Competing as an individual, Sara Curry ran an 18:32.14 in the 5,000 meter Run for her second-best time of the 2011 season. The sophomore from Lawrenceville, Ga., broke the University record last month at the Shamrock Invitational.
The Eagles will compete next weekend at the Seminole Invite in Tallahassee, Fla.
