All About the Repetitions

STATESBORO, Ga. - Day two of Georgia Southern's spring football practice didn't look too much different than day one, but Coach Jeff Monken will be the final judge of that. After he watches the film from practice today, he'll focus in on the areas where the Eagles need to continue to make improvements.
As compared to last year, when the Eagles were still trying to find their way in team and individual drills early on, the steps are surer and most importantly, the tempo is quicker. The faster pace allows both the offense and defense to get more reps in during each practice and since the coaching staff and Eagles are not preparing for a game, concentration can be placed on the details.
The Eagles made improvements throughout the 2010 season and Monken firmly believes the additional repetitions from the extra practices and playoff games helped the team even more. The spring practice sessions, which will include scrimmages, will continue to build on what the team learned in year one. Now with a full season of game experience and film study, the teaching on the field further helps put it all in perspective. The additional repetition helps the coaching staff evaluate, review and then make corrections.
"(The tempo) is a lot better," said Georgia Southern Head Coach Jeff Monken. "We have guys who have played and that gives us a chance to get the huddle up, make the call and execute. We still have a long way to go to get to the level of competition that we want to play at and to be able to compete with the best teams in the league and the best teams in the nation. We really have a lot of work to do and a lot of improvements to make. I just hope that we'll see our team improve."
Georgia Southern will practice in full pads for the first time this spring on Thursday, March 24th.
