BY THE NUMBERS - EAGLE FOOTBALL
STATESBORO, Ga. - "By the Numbers" spotlights a Georgia Southern Athletics team each week with statistics, rankings and other interesting items of note during our Eagles' seasons. The Football team is the featured squad this week.
1: Georgia Southern MBA student and placekicker Adrian Mora tops the NCAA active career leaders chart in field goal percentage, having made 85.07 percent of his field goals (57-67) since 2008.
6: Georgia Southern Football owns an unprecedented six FCS (previously I-AA) national championships, winning back-to-back titles in 1985-1986, 1989-1990 and 1999-2000. Head Coach Jeff Monken was a part the Eagles' last two national championships as an assistant coach for Paul Johnson.
6: Number of rushing touchdowns scored by 2007 Walter Payton Award winner Jayson Foster against Coastal Carolina, a Georgia Southern single-game record.
7: Seven different Eagles scored eight touchdowns in Georgia Southern's 62-21 win over Tusculum earlier this year.
9: The Eagles won their ninth Southern Conference title with the 31-10 defeat of Wofford last weekend.
13: With a 6-0 mark at Paulson Stadium during 2011, Georgia Southern posted its 13th undefeated home season.
22: Three individuals hold the record for most tackles in a single game with 22: Edward Thomas (1997) and James Dickerson (1996) tied Jessie Jenkins' (1985) initial standard. Redshirt-freshman Deion Stanley has the highest single-game total this season with 13 total tackles against The Citadel.
39: The longest home win streak by an FCS team is 39 games, when Georgia Southern went undefeated at Paulson Stadium from Sept. 27, 1997 through December 15, 2001. The Eagles also hold the second-longest streak, 38 games, recorded from 1985-1990. Georgia Southern has the longest home win streak among SoCon schools with eight dating back to the upset of then-top-ranked Appalachian State in 2010.
41: Georgia Southern has won 41 NCAA playoff games, 11 more than the next team on the list. Should the Eagles be included in the field of 20 teams announced Sunday at 10 a.m. on ESPNU, it will bring their playoff appearances total to 18.
63: Distance on the longest field goal in NCAA FCS history by Tim Foley against James Madison in 1987. Foley is also in the NCAA record books for his 90.9 success rate for field goals longer than 50 yards (made 10-11 attempts) and highest percentage (season and career) for field goals of 40-plus yards.
143: Mora, who broke the NCAA FCS record for career consecutive extra points against Furman earlier this year, continues to extend the record and stands at a perfect 143-143.
1,870: Senior Laron Scott, who owns Georgia Southern's single-season records for kickoff returns and kickoff return yardage (2010), also took over the career record earlier this season and adds to that total with 1,870 kickoff return yards. He currently ranks second in the nation this season with an average of 34.37 yards per return.
6,559: The 1999 Walter Payton Award winner, Adrian Peterson rushed for 6,559 yards in his career (a total which does not include playoff games), the NCAA Division I record (yes, you read that correctly, the FBS record holder had 6,397). Peterson also still holds the Division I record for most rushing touchdowns in a career with 84 (which also does not include his 30 playoff TDs).
