Record Number Of Eagles Earn SoCon Academic Honors

SPARTANBURN, S.C. - The Southern Conference announced the 2009-10 SoCon Academic Honor Roll, and 152 Georgia Southern student-athletes earned the honor, achieving at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA).
The Football Team led the way for Georgia Southern, with 25 student-athletes earning the honor. Baseball and Women's Swimming and Diving each had 17 student-athletes selected, while Women's Track and Field had 14 student-athletes named to the honor roll.
Six Eagles earned 4.0 GPAs, including Rachel Sale (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) and Rachael Stockwell (Jacksonville, Fla.) of the Swimming and Diving Team, GS Baseball's Jake Ware (Statesboro, Ga.), Caroline Scales (Chattanooga, Tenn.) from the Women's Soccer Team, and Volleyball's Moriah Bellissimo (Blackstone, Va.).
Georgia Southern had 63 student-athletes earn the Commissioner's Medal, earning at least a 3.5 GPA. Georgia Southern's 152 recognized student-athletes is the most Eagles to earn the honor since joining the conference in 1992.
Among the 12 conference schools, a total of 1,921 student-athletes were named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll, led by Appalachian State with 197 honorees. Georgia Southern was fourth among conference members behind Elon (176) and Wofford (175).
The Academic Honor Roll was established by the league's Athletics Directors prior to the 1988-89 athletics season. In order to be eligible, student-athletes must have at least a 3.0 GPA while passing 24 credit hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
