8/25/2010 3:52:00 AM | General
MACON, GA - The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (GSHF) narrowed its list for individuals eligible for induction in 2011 from 70 to 36 nominees, which includes Georgia Southern All-America quarterback Tracy Ham and four-time All-State and two-time basketball All-American Chester Webb. Ham, recently inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and a 2007 inductee to the College Football Hall of Fame, is Georgia Southern's all-time leader in total offense (8,969 yards), passing (5,757 yards) and passing touchdowns (34) as well as holding numerous other Eagle records. Webb played from 1952-56 under the Georgia Teachers College mantle and ranks as the all-time leading scorer (2,542 points) and rebounder (1,685) in the history of the program.
The Screening Committee is made up of GSHF board members, hall of famers, sports media representatives and athletic administrators. After discussing each of the nominees, the members of the committee voted for the individuals they considered most qualified to be the newest members of the hall of fame. The nominees receiving the highest number of votes in their respective categories will now be forwarded to the Honors Court who will choose the seven individuals that will be enshrined in 2011.
Among the football, basketball, and baseball players and coaches still eligible are a number of athletes and contributors from less-publicized areas of athletics. These include two track & field athletes, two golfers, two gymnasts, two athletic administrators, a soccer player, a referee, a tennis player, a broadcaster, and a boxer. Georgia Southern alum, Marvin Vanover, who has had a long career as a coach and administrator, is among the list of nominees.
The GSHF Honors Court will meet in Macon on Tuesday, September 14 to make the final selections for the Class of 2011. Those selected by the Honors Court will be honored at the 2011 GSHF Induction Ceremony.
