Irwin Named Director of Student-Athlete Services

STATESBORO, Ga. - Jacqueline Irwin, Ph.D., has been hired as Director of Student-Athlete Services at Georgia Southern University. Through a variety of programs and services, Irwin and the Student-Athlete Services staff will oversee the academic welfare of 360 Eagle student-athletes from orientation through graduation.
For the last four years, Irwin held the position of assistant professor of communication studies at Sacramento State University while also serving as the academic advisor for the Hornet football team. Additional responsibilities for Irwin included the advisement of the Hornet men's basketball team and committee appointments addressing academic standards and policy.
Irwin completed her bachelor of fine arts in graphic design from the University of Kansas in 2001 and continued her studies at Kansas, earning a M.A. and Ph.D. in communication studies. While pursuing her advanced degrees, she taught courses in the KU communications studies department and worked for the Jayhawk men's basketball program as a strategic tutor and academic counselor.
An active member of several committees at Sacramento State, Irwin served on the University Academic Policy Committee and Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee. She chaired Sacramento State's Department of Communications Academic Affairs Committee for three years and served as one of the department's faculty senate representatives for two years. The El Dorado, Kan., native is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics, National Communication Association and Central States Communication Association.
Irwin, a fifth-generation educator, was the lead author with three others of a college textbook, "Competent Communication at Work: Strategies & Standards for Success," due to be released next month.
