SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference honored 159 student-athletes when it announced the Academic All-Conference team for the 2009-10 winter season. All 12 Southern Conference institutions were represented on the list – which included seven Eagle student-athletes.
The 159 student-athletes, which participated in men's and women's basketball, wrestling and men's and women's indoor track and field recorded a 3.56 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Women's basketball named four student-athletes to the list, while indoor track and field listed three. Sophomore guard Samantha Williams boasted a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA to headline the list. Williams was one of two student-athletes in the conference to claim a perfect GPA – the other was UNC Greensboro track athlete Joey Thompson.
Joining Williams on the list from women's basketball were Logan Youngblood, Krista Tate and Jessica Geiger, while Kassi Lee, Brittani Martin and Laura Fuller joined from track and field.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the winter season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
The league's indoor track and field teams supplied the most student-athletes to the team, including 71 women and 33 men. Women's basketball (32 players) was also well represented. Western Carolina led all schools with 25 honorees followed by Appalachian State (18) and Elon (16).
