Ben Freakley is in his third season as the assistant coach at Georgia Southern after spending four seasons as the head coach at the Virginian Military Institute.
In just his second season at VMI, he led the Keydets to the best Big South finish in school history, using a team filled with freshmen, three of which earned All-Big South Freshman Team honors.
At VMI, Freakley earned a reputation as a great recruiter. His players consistently earned Big South All-Freshman accolades, and he was able to sign numerous Virginia Olympic Development players during his four-year tenure.
A 2000 Georgia Southern graduate, Freakley played for the Eagles before spending the next two seasons as a graduate assistant at Georgia Southern.
After graduation, Freakley began to build his coaching resume, spending the 2003 season as an assistant at College of Charleston, assisting with all aspects of the program.
Prior to his stint at VMI, Freakley was the head coach at Erskine College. In his first season, he directed the Division II squad into the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tournament, the first appearance in his players’ careers. The Flying Feet went 9-7-1 in his second season, the program’s first winning season in seven years.
Freakley holds several coaching licenses, including a USSF “A” License from the United States Soccer Federation as well as a Premier National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA). Freakley served as the head coach of the Boys ‘94 ODP Virginia team and was a member of the Region 1 ODP staff.
Freakley earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations from Georgia Southern in 2000 and received his Master of Science in Sport Management from the Georgia Southern in May 2003. He is currently pursuing a master’s in sports psychology.
Freakley is married to former Georgia Southern women’s soccer player Melissa Cox. The two married in 2003, and have two sons, Benjamin and Connor.
