Track & Field Finishes Third at SoCon Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. - Georgia Southern junior Lynndsey Hyter (Dallas, Texas) was named the Co-Outstanding Field Performer after winning the Pentathlon and placing first in four of the five events. Hyter took the win in the overall event for the second straight year as the Eagles finished third in the 2010 Southern Conference Track & Field Championships held at Clemson University. Western Carolina defended its title with Appalachian State finishing in second place. Samford, Elon and College of Charleston finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, with Chattanooga and The Citadel tying for seventh, Furman placing ninth, and Davidson rounding out the field.
Hyter competed in the Pentathlon, winning the event Friday with 3,494 points, third-best total at Georgia Southern, then took three top-five finishes. The Dallas, Texas, finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.20m, the best mark for Georgia Southern this season and a top-five mark in program history. In the long jump, she tied her best performance of the season with a distance of 5.65 meters for third place.
Hyter placed fifth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.97, her best of the season, and finishing under nine seconds for the first time this season. In her final field event, she had a height of 1.53 meters for 12th place in the high jump.
Georgia Southern captured four of the top 10 positions in the Long Jump with Shaunta Hamilton (Macon, Ga.) finishing second at 5.68 and Hyter finishing third. Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) recorded a 5.45 for sixth place and Millicent Brooks-Millender (Douglasville, Ga.) rounded out the top 10 at 5.32.
Freshman Jasmine Billings (Lawrenceville, Ga.) recorded the second-best time in Georgia Southern history in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.76. For her efforts, Billings was named to the All-Freshman Team for the event. Senior Anthony placed fourth with a time of 7.74 in the 60 meter dash and also competed in the triple jump, posting a distance of 11.34 for 12th place.
Hyter and Hamilton switched finishes in the Triple Jump with Hamilton at 11.97 meters, her best distance for the season, taking third behind Hyter's second-place finish.
Junior JoAnn JaJa Benson (Savannah, Ga.) took third in the 400 meter dash with a season-best time of 57.62. Sophomore Morgan Jefferson (Villa Rica, Ga.) was .01 seconds behind JaJa Benson with a time of 57.63 for fourth place. Antoinette Jordan (Griffin, Ga.) took fifth place in the 200 meter dash with another season-best time, 25.44, in the 200 meter dash.
The 4X400 Relay team comprised of freshman Kristiana Towns (Decatur, Ga ), Jordan, JaJa Benson and Jefferson posted its best time of the season with a 3:56.70 time, finishing in second behind Western Carolina. The Distance Medley Relay team of sophomore Azura Robillard (Altamonte Springs, Fla.), Benson, Jefferson and Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) recorded its top time of the 2010 indoor season at 12:02.79 for a sixth-place finish. The time ranks among Georgia Southern's top five all-time.
Senior Fuller recorded her best time in the preliminaries of the 800 meter run, 2:18.86, taking almost five seconds off her previous top time. Fuller placed 18th in the mile run
Hamilton also competed in the Pentathlon with an 11th-place finish totaling 2,291 points. Alexandria Cassagnol placed sixth in the High Jump tying her best height of 1.58 meters.
Senior Amanda Spivy (Pembroke, Ga.) bettered her 2010 best performance by nearly a full meter with a 13.97 distance for seventh place in the weight throw. Freshman Megan Fannon (Doraville, Ga. ) was named to the All-Freshman Team for the Weight Throw, finishing eighth with a distance of 13.10, adding more than half a meter to her previous best.
