STATESBORO, Ga. - Once again weather delayed Georgia Southern's morning session but the Eagles were still able to get the full amount of practice time in Friday (Aug. 14), the last official two-a-day practice day during fall football camp.
Head coach Chris Hatcher and his team worked for more than two hours in the morning and then in the evening another two and a half hours, finishing with a scrimmage session.
"I thought we had a good day. I thought we pushed through, again we've got a great attitude. We have got a lot of guys getting better; it's the same old thing we are not anywhere where we need to be but we're progressing at the pace we need to progress at. This morning we fought through some bad weather. We changed some things around, doing more individual group work then we took all the scrimmage work and did it this evening," said Hatcher. "We're getting 'camp legs' a little bit but tomorrow I expect us to come out and have a good one, and that will signify the end of camp. We'll take two days off then we have four days of preseason, and after that we'll have two weeks getting ready for the first game."
Following 10 straight days of practice, Hatcher noted it's common to battle fatigue at this point of fall camp.
"You ought to be tired this time of camp. Number one I think we are in pretty good shape but your legs start to get a little heavy and you have to be mentally tough to push through those type of things. That's what you want to see, all good football players are mentally tough," said the third-year head coach.
During the end of the evening practice: Dion DuBose recorded a sack on 3rd-and-long... Tavaris Williams recovered a fumble on third down and A.J. McCray nearly came up with an interception... Kyle Collins connected with Nico Hickey on a 30-yard completion... James Arowoselu and Josh Rowe each recorded a sack... The defense also recorded two pass break-ups on third down.
Kickoff for the season-opener against Albany (N.Y.) on Saturday, September 5th is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Paulson Stadium. For ticket information call 800-GSU-WINS.
