Former Alabama pitching coach B.J. Green joined the Georgia Southern baseball staff in July 2009 and begins his fourth season with the Eagles. Green brings with him to Statesboro over 14 years of Southeastern Conference experience as both a player and coach.
Since arriving on campus at Georgia Southern in 2010, Green has lowered the team’s earned run average (ERA) in each season. In his first season at GSU the Eagles posted a 5.94 ERA but just a year later that ERA was lowered by over a run to a 4.48 ERA. Last year the Eagles posted an evan better 4.47 ERA.
Green has also helped develop five different pitchers into Major League Baseball draft talent since joining the Eagles. In all three seasons two pitchers have drafted including the Chicago White Sox’s 2012 second round selection, Chris Beck.
2011 was a banner year for the Eagles’ pitching staff. Andy Moye and Matt Murray, who both tied for the team lead with a 2.39 ERA, were drafted in the top-15 rounds. Green helped Moye improve from being a 50th draft pick 2010 to a 15th round selection in 2011. Moye cut his ERA by over half and set career bests in innings pitched, hits, earned runs and batting average against.
Chris Beck tossed a complete game 1-0 shutout of Samford in the Southern Conference Tournament Championship game to cap off GSU’s run through the tournament. Green helped Beck improve on a rough freshman campaign in 2011 and the sophomore ace lowered his ERA from 8.31, improved his total innings pitched by over 70, doubled his strikeout to walk ratio and dropped over .100 points off of his batting average against.
Prior to joining the Eagles, Green served as the pitching coach for seven seasons at Alabama. During his 11-year career as a player and coach, Green helped the Crimson Tide to eight NCAA tournament appearances, three SEC Tournament Championships (1999, 2002 and 2003), two Super Regional appearances, the 2006 SEC regular season title, the 2002 SEC West championship and a 1999 College World Series appearance. Individual honors include 20 draftees, five major league debuts, two first-round picks, four Freshman All-Americans and a National and SEC Freshman of the Year.
While at Alabama, Green helped mold his players into some of the best pitchers in the country. In 2006, Alabama pitchers led the SEC with a 3.51 ERA. The 2004 pitching staff finished second in the conference and eighth in the NCAA with a 3.36 ERA.
Five of his former pitchers threw for major league clubs including Lance Cormier (Arizona, Atlanta, Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles Dodgers), Wade LeBlanc (San Diego, Miami), Tommy Hunter (Texas, Baltimore), David Robertson (New York Yankees), and Taylor Tankersley (Miami, New York Mets).
Green also has served as the Harwich Mariners pitching coach in 2003.
Before his coaching tenure, Green was a letterman for the Crimson Tide from 1998-2001. He compiled an 18-4 (.818) career record and set the UA freshman record with eight wins on the mound in 1998.
As a member of the Tide, in 1999, Green helped lead the team to a third-place College World Series appearance and a SEC Tournament Championship.
A native of Gardendale, Ala., Green is a 2002 graduate of the University of Alabama in sports fitness management.
Green is married to the former Jessica Aliffi and the two are parents of a son Tripp.
