Two Join Football Coaching Staff

STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern head football coach Chris Hatcher announced the recent addition of two coaches to his staff. Tucker Pruitt joins the staff as an offensive assistant/quarterbacks while Chris Covington will join the defensive staff as a student assistant coach.
Pruitt, who replaces Joe Hollis on staff and officially begins his duties on July 1, was a member of the Valdosta State University program as a quarterback and was recruited to play for the Blazers by Hatcher. During his four years Pruitt played in 30 games, throwing for nearly 1,500 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also rushed for five touchdowns in his career as well.
He was a member of the 2007 Division II National Championship team and was a redshirt on the 2004 title team.
Originally from Fitzgerald, Pruitt was a standout in the classroom as well earning a spot on the Academic Honor Roll all four years. He graduated from Valdosta with a bachelor's degree in Health/Physical Education in spring 2008 and is currently finishing his requirements for a master's degree in Educational Leadership from VSU.
“I am excited to announce Tucker Pruitt joining my coaching staff. He is a former quarterback and a tremendous competitor. Tucker was one of the toughest QBs I have ever known and his extensive knowledge of football will help our program,” said Hatcher.
Covington is no stranger to Eagle Football, recently completing his playing career. Since he saved his redshirt year, Covington will spend his fifth year coaching with the defensive staff. Covington was a two-time All-America selection, earning Honorable Mention honors as a defensive back in 2007 and Second Team accolades at linebacker last fall.
He played in every game of his career, all 45. Covington ranked among the national leaders recording four interceptions his junior year. Last fall he also ranked among the nation's best recording 6.5 sacks and 14 tackles for a loss. He finished with 171 tackles in his career.
“Chris has great pride in the Georgia Southern Football program, he bleeds Blue and White. He is one of the most selfless players I have ever known and was the consummate team player,” said Hatcher. “I am glad Chris has decided to start his coaching career here at Georgia Southern. His expertise and reputation as a player will be big in helping our defense.”
