STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern University announced two future football games against a pair of tradition-rich Football Bowl Subdivision programs. Director of Athletics Sam Baker confirmed Friday (May 1) the Eagles will travel to Alabama in 2011 and Georgia Tech in 2015.
It marks the Eagles' first-ever meeting with either program.
On November 19, 2011 the Eagles will travel to Tuscaloosa to face the Crimson Tide. Last year Alabama spent part of the season number one in the polls, advanced to the Southeastern Conference championship game and played in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The Eagles open the 2015 season on September 5th in Atlanta against the Yellow Jackets and former GS head coach Paul Johnson. In his first season with Tech, Johnson led the Yellow Jackets to the Chick-fil-A Bowl and 9-4 record.
During his five years as head coach at Georgia Southern, Johnson led the Eagles to three consecutive FCS national championship game appearances and back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000. He won five straight Southern Conference titles, twice was named National Coach of the Year and compiled a 62-10 record.
“This is a great opportunity for our football program to play two high-profile institutions in Alabama and Georgia Tech. We are very excited to announce these upcoming games,” said Baker.
