Track & Field Set to Host the SoCon Championships

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern track & field team is hosting the 2009 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships and will look to bring home their second title in three years. The Eagles finished third last season and have only finished lower than third place twice in their history.
GSU has had two stellar competitions leading into the SoCon Championships. The Eagles broke school records at the Florida Relays and set new season highs at the War Eagle Invitational.
Melanie Trumbo (Lilburn, Ga.) won the high jump at the War Eagle Invitational and tied her regional qualifying mark of 1.75 meters from the Florida Relays. Last season Trumbo jumped a 5'06.00” claiming the high jump crown in the 2008 Outdoor Championships. Jasmine Lightning (Dacula, Ga.) placed second in the event with a leap of 5'04.25”. Trumbo also notched a third place finish in the heptathlon with a score of 4,321.
The Eagles set a new school record in the 1600 sprint medley at the Flordia Relays. GSU set the new school record with a time of 4:02.47 in the 1600 sprint medley.
Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) broke the school record in the 1500 meter run at the Florida Relays with a time of 4:45.55. Fuller narrowly passed the previous mark of 4:45.56 held by Brittney Jett.
In all Georgia Southern claimed four individual Southern Conference Championships in 2008 with Ballard winning the 400m hurdles, Trumbo in the high jump, Charles in the shot put and Shaunta Hamilton (Macon, Ga.) in the long jump.
The 2009 SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships gets underway at 8:00 a.m. at Eagle Field on Saturday and will run through Sunday. Live results can be found at http://www.cfpitiming.com. Concessions will be sold at the meet and no outside food will be allowed into the facility.
