CHICAGO, Ill. -- Redshirt-freshman defensive lineman Brent Russell was named the 2009 Freshman of the Year for the Division I Football Championship Subdivision by the College Sporting News. The annual edition of CSN's "Fabulous Fifty Team" includes 45 players on offense and defense, and honors five individuals for their performances on offense, defense, offensive line, in the playoffs and as a first-year player.
Russell (Comer, Ga./Madison County) was selected to the First Team All-Southern Conference team by the SoCon Sports Media Association, becoming only the third Eagle this decade to earn those honors as a freshman. He was the only rookie selected to this year's SoCon top squad and one of only two selected overall.
A second-team All-Conference pick by the SoCon coaches, Russell had a team-best 6.0 sacks which put him in a tie for 53rd nationally, the second-highest ranked freshman in the country in that category. Russell also appeared in the national rankings tied for 83rd in tackles for a loss (11.0). Starting in all 11 games, Russell finished the 2009 season with 48 tackles as well as three blocked kicks. He had one interception and forced a fumble.
