SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Coleman Lew & Associates, Inc., a national executive search firm, and the Southern Conference, the nation's fifth oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association, announced the selection of 21 student athletes as recipients of the third annual Coleman Lew Award.
The award recognizes scholar-athletes from each of the Southern Conference's 11 member institutions. Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior woman administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award recipients.
Huxtable, a junior member of the Eagles women's tennis team has excelled both in and out of the classroom. The team's co-captain amassed five wins in 2008 and helped GSU to one of its most successful seasons in recent history with an 11-11 record and a trip to the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament. Huxtable, an Early Childhood Education major, was recently named to the Southern Conference All-Academic Team after maintaining a 3.48 grade point average.
King, a member of the GSU baseball team played an integral role for the Eagles. The junior outfielder finished the season with a .317 batting average appearing in 26 games. He concluded the 2008 season with a .466 on base percentage. King's performance in the classroom was equally as impressive, as the Finance major maintained a 4.0 grade point average during the 2007-08 academic year.
According to Kenneth D.Carrick, Jr., partner-managing director, “Our firm, as an education partner with the Southern Conference, is proud to present the Coleman Lew Leadership Award to these outstanding student-athletes. These individuals represent the best in academic performance, athletic skill and leadership ability.”
