Track & Field Concludes CCU Invitational with Strong Outing

CONWAY, S.C. ? The Georgia Southern track & field team concluded the CCU Invitational with an impressive showing on Saturday, as the Eagles officially opened the outdoor season at the CCU Track in Conway.
Sophomore Shaunta Hamilton was victorious in the long jump with a leap of 19'01.50”. The Macon, Ga. native finished just ahead of teammate Lynndsey Hyter (Dallas, Texas) who finished second with a distance of 19'00.75”. Dominique Thurman (Riverdale, Ga.) placed sixth with a jump of 17'10.25”.
Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) opened the 2008 season claiming the triple jump title recording a mark of 40'06.75”. Anthony placed third in the 100m dash with a time of 12.25. Teammates Hamilton and Hyter finished in second and third in the triple jump with leaps of 40'02.75” and 40'02.25” respectively. There were 40 total athletes that competed in the triple jump.
GSU sophomore Jessica Irizarry (Kennesaw, Ga.) placed seventh in the javelin throwing a distance of 121'05”.
Georgia Southern fared very well in the relays as they placed second in both the 4x100 and 4x400m events. The 4x100m squad clocked in with a time of 47.18, while the 4x400m unit turned in a time of 3:56.99.
Senior Amber Wilson (Calhoun, Ga.) registered a sixth place finish in the 100m hurdles crossing the finish line with a time of 15.41. Over 50 competitors competed in the women's 100m hurdles.
Senior Shamyria Ortiz (Newnan, Ga.) earned a third place finish in the 200m dash racing to a time of 24.93.
The Eagles are back on the track March 20-22, when they make a return trip to Conway, S.C. for the Shamrock Invitational at the CCU Track. The meet is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
