CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The Georgia Southern track & field team had an impressive showing on Saturday, at the Carolina Chick-fil-A Invitational in Chapel Hill, which was hosted by the University of North Carolina.
Georgia Southern had three competitors make it to the finals of the 60m dash. Sophomore Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) finished in eighth place with a time of 7.76. Teammates Shamyria Ortiz (Newnan, Ga.) and Tierra Watts (Albany, Ga.) finished in 11th and 13th place respectively racing to times of 7.82 and 7.86. Anthony continued her strong outing jumping 39'09.75” in the long jump.
Ortiz claimed a sixth place finish in the 200m event earning a time of 25.63. Over 50 competitors competed in the 200m on Saturday morning. Junior Ashley Bush-Hardy (Fayetteville, Ga.) placed 10th in the 400m dash clocking in at 59.81.
Junior Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and senior Abby Bloom (Snellville, Ga.) finished back-to-back in the 800m. Jennings came in seventh place with a time of 2:19.38, while Bloom recorded a time of 2:20.10 for an eighth place finish.
Shaunta Hamilton (Macon, Ga.) posted impressive numbers in both the long and triple jump events. She recorded a mark of 19'00.00” in the long jump and a 39'10.50” in the triple jump.
The Eagles conclude the indoor season (Feb. 29) as they travel to Clemson, S.C. to compete at the Southern Conference indoor championships. The meet is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
