Pack the House in Pink a Huge Success

STATESBORO, Ga. - "Pack the House in Pink," Georgia Southern's third annual breast cancer awareness event, was a great success, drawing the fourth-largest crowd for a Georgia Southern women's basketball game and the sixth-largest for the men's - the largest crowd in over 16 years.
The event was held at Hanner Fieldhouse as part of a men's and women's basketball double-header, Saturday (Jan. 26), and was preceded by the Hanner Hooligans Tailgate.
The Statesboro Service League, Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, Georgia Southern Athletics and Colleges Against Cancer were integral to the success of the event.
“Pack the House in Pink” was created by the Statesboro Service League to remember one of their members, Kathy Brunson, who lost a battle with breast cancer several years ago. Member/sustainer Jo Helen Propes knew of Brunson's love of GSU basketball and started the event in partnership with Georgia Southern Athletics, to remember Brunson's fight with breast cancer. After the first year, Zeta Tau Alpha was asked by Statesboro Service League and Georgia Southern Athletics to coordinate the legwork and, in turn, offer monies made to their philanthropy, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
A new addition to this year's event was the Georgia Southern student organization, Colleges Against Cancer. The organization was started three years ago and is affiliated with the American Cancer Society. Colleges Against Cancer strives to bring awareness not only to the student body, but also the faculty and staff at Georgia Southern.
Georgia Southern Athletics would like to thank the Statesboro Service League, Zeta Tau Alpha, Colleges Against Cancer, Phi Mu, Delta Tau Delta and Kappa Kappa Gamma for their efforts in making this years “Pack the House in Pink” a successful event.
Georgia Southern Athletics would also like to recognize and thank Mandy Fortune, Emily Ross (Statesboro Service League's coordinator for “Pack the House in Pink”), Becky Radney (Zeta Tau Alpha) and John Ramjford (GSU Athletics) for their many contributions. Without their tireless efforts, this event would not have been the great success it was.
Breast cancer education and awareness is Zeta Tau Alpha's national philanthropy, and all of its philanthropic events throughout the year support this cause. Naturally, it was a perfect match to participate in “Pack the House in Pink.” Since 1992 Zeta Tau Alpha has distributed 9.75 million shower cards with instructions of the proper method for breast self-examination (BSE). Statesboro Service League serves over 25 local programs that include, but are not limited to: the Boys and Girls Club, Foster Children, Safe Haven, Joseph Home for Boys, the GSU Museum and many others. Over 100 women, who participate by invitation, give daily, weekly and monthly of their time, talents, money and spirit to so many in need. In 2007 the Statesboro Service League raised over $40,000 that helped fund many of the projects that the Service League puts on every year.
Colleges Against Cancer's mission is to help educate the campus about cancer and its related issues. The organization is affiliated with the American Cancer Society, and through this partnership, strives to bring awareness to not only the student body, but also the faculty and staff at Georgia Southern. Other projects include Relay for Life and other cancer awareness events.
