STATESBORO, Ga. ? A pair of Georgia Southern freshmen were named Southern Conference ?Player of the Week' after leading the football squad to a season-ending 17-10 win last Saturday at Furman. Quarterback Lee Chapple (Norcross/Greater Atlanta Christian) was selected as ?Offensive Player of the Week' while linebacker Dion Dubose (Dacula/Norcross) was tabbed as ?Defensive Player of the Week'.
It was the first SoCon weekly award for both and the first time this year the Eagles received two winners during the same week. Both were instrumental during the Eagles' 17-10 win against the 14th-ranked Paladins.
Chapple made his second start of the year and saw his first action after missing the previous two weeks with an injury. The redshirt-freshman set program records for completions and attempts in a game following his 39-of-56 passing performance. Chapple threw for 323 yards and a pair of touchdowns with one interception. His 39 completions not only set a Georgia Southern record, but ranked as the fourth-most in a Southern Conference game. The 323 passing yards were fourth-highest in Eagle history.
Entering the Furman game Chapple was 39-of-65 for 464 yards and three scores in six games played.
Dubose made his third start of the year at middle linebacker. He recorded a team-leading and career-high 10 tackles in the win. Dubose, who entered the game with 22 tackles, also recorded his first two sacks of the year.
With the win Georgia Southern (4-4 SoCon) improved to 6-5 overall, securing its 25th winning season in 27 years since the football program was re-established. The victory also capped an undefeated record in road conference games (4-0).
