STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern senior wide receiver Raja Andrews (Swainsboro/Swainsboro) was named the Southern Conference's ?Special Teams Player of the Week', announced by the league office on Monday. Andrews, who earned the first SoCon weekly award of his career, set a career-high in punt return yards last Saturday against Appalachian State.
Andrews returned two punts for 103 yards, including an 84-yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter of the 37-36 loss. That touchdown return was the second of his career, joining Jayson Foster, Anthony Williams and Rodney Oglesby in sharing the Eagles' career record. Georgia Southern also tied a team season record with its second punt return for a TD this year, actually the second consecutive game returning a punt for a TD (shared by 2004, 1993 and 1984 teams).
Andrews now leads the SoCon and ranks second nationally with his 21.8 yards per punt return. He also leads Georgia Southern with 28 pass receptions for 454 yards, just two receptions shy of matching the Eagles' all-time record (93 by Monty Sharpe).
The Eagles (3-4 overall, 1-3 SoCon) travel to Western Carolina this Saturday (Oct. 25), kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
