A successful coach for over 20 years, Cathy Beene relinquished her coaching responsibilities in the spring of 2002 to devote her entire attention to administrative duties, trading the title of coach for Assistant Athletic Director. She was later named Associate Athletic Director in the fall of 2006. Beene arrived at Georgia Southern in 1996 as the director of tennis and head women's tennis coach, and was named Senior Woman Administrator on October 1, 1999.
This was not the first time Beene has balanced administrative work with her duties as a head coach. Prior to her arrival in Statesboro, Beene was the head women's tennis coach, Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at the University of Texas at Arlington for three years.
Before that, Beene spent seven years at the University of Houston, where she helped resurrect the women's tennis program into one of the NCAA's elite programs. While at Houston, she served as assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator in charge of student services for five years before being promoted to associate athletic director in 1993. In addition, Beene served on the NACDA Executive Committee.
As an administrator, Beene has served as the chair of the Southwest Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Committee and was a member of the SWC Administrative Committee for Women's Sports. She was also selected to chair the NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Committee from 1993-1997 after serving on the committee from 1990-1992.
A 1973 graduate of Lamar University, Beene's playing, coaching and administrative skills were recognized by her alma mater when she was inducted into the Lamar University Hall of Fame in 1995.
Beene served as a member of the NCAA Championship and Competition Cabinet, is the chair of the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Committee, the former chair for the SoCon Softball Committee and is the former chair of the Senior Woman Administrators. Most recently, in 2009, Beene was re-elected to the NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Committee.
