STATESBORO, Ga. ? Senior Jayson Foster (Canton/Cherokee County) made his first start at quarterback in two years, and his efforts in Georgia Southern's win over West Georgia earned him Southern Conference ?Co-Offensive Player of the Week' honors. It marked his third career weekly SoCon award.
Foster rushed for a career-high 231 yards (on 11 carries) and equaled a high of four touchdowns accounted for (three rushing, one passing) as Georgia Southern and first-year head coach Chris Hatcher opened the 2007 season with a 45-21 victory.
He set a GS record for most rushing yards in a season-opener. That marked the third consecutive year that an Eagle had set that mark (Jermaine Austin in 2005 and Chris Covington in 2006). Foster also completed 6-of-9 passes for 124 yards and a score. That TD pass to Michael McIntosh went for 81 yards, the third-longest pass completion in GS history.
Foster also reached a couple of milestones in the game, surpassing 2,000 career rushing yards, recorded his 51st career TD accounted for and his third-ever game with 100 yards rushing and passing.
The Eagles (1-0) travel to Coastal Carolina this Saturday (Sept. 15) for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The game will be televised live on SportSouth.
