STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern junior place kicker Jesse Hartley (Tallahassee, FL/Lincoln) was named ?National Player of the Week' by College Sporting News and The Sports Network after helping the Eagles defeat South Dakota State 41-38.
It's the first time in his career Hartley, who earlier on Monday was named Southern Conference ?Special Teams Player of the Week', received a national weekly award.
Hartley kicked a 54-yard game-winning field goal as time expired in the 41-38 victory over the Jackrabbits. It was the longest kick in Georgia Southern history to win a game on the final play. Hartley's career-best FG was the longest since Chris Chambers nailed a 57-yarder at Oregon State in September 1999.
In the game Hartley finished 2-for-2 in field goals and 5-for-5 on extra points.
The Eagles (4-1 overall, 1-1 SoCon) resume Southern Conference play Saturday (Oct. 13), traveling to Elon. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be televised live on SportSouth.
