STATESBORO, Ga. ? Nicole Brown, Georgia Southern's only track & field athlete to compete at the NCAA Championships, has been named assistant track & field coach by head coach Natalie Smith.
“I believe that Nicole was a great hire for not only the track & field team but for the athletic department and Georgia Southern as a whole,” said Smith. “Brown will be working in the area of sprints and jumps which she has had a lot of success in and she has a really good understanding of what it takes to be successful in those areas.”
In addition to her sprints and jumps coaching responsibilities, Brown will be in charge of the team's recruiting, practices, scheduling and other administrative duties.
An accomplished athlete, Brown was the 2007 Southern Conference Field Performer of the Year (indoor) and 2007 SoCon Track Athlete of the Year (outdoor). She holds 11 Georgia Southern school records as well as two SoCon records (60m indoor, long jump outdoor). Brown was named to the NCAA All-East Region team in 2007 for her performance in the 4x100m relay and the triple jump. She also claimed the East Regional Championship in the triple jump in 2007.
In addition to her outstanding career on the track, Brown also excelled in the classroom. She was a four-year member of the Socon All-Academic team and was named to the All-District Academic second team by ESPN the Magazine.
Brown received her B.B.A in Information Systems with an emphasis on Enterprise Security from Georgia Southern in the spring of 2007.
“I am really excited for Nicole and I am even more excited as her former coach to see her choose this as her career opener,” said Smith. “I saw her grow as an athlete and now I have the opportunity to see her grow as a professional. I am really happy for her”
