The Team
Their Roles
Academic Advisors: Every athlete has an assigned Academic Advisor that works with his/her team. They are available to meet by appointment or drop-in to review any concerns regarding their coursework, academic schedule or discuss any academic concerns or decisions. Charged with supporting the recruitment, retention and graduation of student-athletes, Academic Advisors monitor academic progress and provide guidance for individualized academic support plans of each student-athlete. Advisors also monitor and track NCAA continuing eligibility by collaborating with campus units, including advising centers, to help ensure student-athletes course schedules meet curriculum requirements of their degree which as well as help support students who are balancing the demands of sport participation.
Educational Specialists: Our department utilizes the skills of two full-time Learning Specialists who work with cohorts of student-athletes who may have particular learning needs or challenges with the college transition process. Each student-athlete they work with has structured hours of time in which they work one-on-one to enhance their academic skills and learning strategies, in addition to strengthening organization and time management skills.

Tutors: The most widely used service available to our student-athletes is our tutoring program. It is available for free to any athlete, regardless of GPA, Athletic Grant in Aid, or class standing. Structured study sessions are a vital component of the comprehensive academic support services to all student-athletes. Structured study sessions are organized to maximize the use of time in attending to course homework, reading or research and/or learning skill development.
Mentors: To assist student-athletes with the college transition and maintain a support structure that emphasizes the balance between sport and school, some athletes participate in our mentor program. Depending on the needs of the student-athlete this may be a daily meeting with a mentor, in which they collaborate to identify academic objectives to be fulfilled each day, or less frequent (weekly) and designed to help with organization, time management, progress tracking and academic monitoring.
