STATESBORO, Ga. – For the first time this season the Georgia Southern women's tennis team will face off against conference opponents in the Sun Belt Conference Pod hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Eagles will take on host Coastal Carolina and South Alabama on Saturday and Sunday.
The Chants open play Saturday with a 10-5 record overall and 0-1 in conference play. Both teams will head into Saturday posting winning streaks of three matches. The Eagles and Chants did not meet last season so this will be the first time these two teams meet as Sun Belt opponents.
South Alabama heads into Sundays match with an 11-1 record overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Jaguars post a six match winning streak defeating Southeastern Louisiana, Samford, Lamar, Louisiana, Lipscomb, and Louisiana Tech. The Jaguars defeated the Eagles twice last season, once inside the Wallis Tennis Center and once at the Sun Belt Conference tournament to knock the Eagles out in the second round.
WHAT HEAD COACH SEAN MCCAFFREY SAID
"Now that we are getting into conference play things get a little bit more competitive for our women. Both Coastal Carolina and South Alabama are very strong teams and will prove to be a great challenge for the team as we look to continue our improvement this season. At this point of the season the team will need to rely and trust the work they have put in while in the weight room, in training and in past match experiences. I am so impressed with where this team started and how we have grown. I expect they will continue their upward trend as we enter this competitive and challenging segment of the season."
