STATESBORO, Ga. – Goalkeepers coach
Micah Varner has had Friday's match against South Alabama circled on the calendar for months now. Friday marks the first time Varner and his former head coach at Carson-Newman, Richard Moodie, will face off as coaches.
"Yeah obviously it's an exciting opportunity to go up against one of your former coaches," goalkeepers coach
Micah Varner said. "Especially one who played a major role in your development. As a coach you always want to compete against the best and that's what we will be doing against Richard and his South Alabama team. He is a top class coach and I am really looking forward to the matchup."
Since coming to Georgia Southern, coach Varner's goalkeepers have etched their names into the record books early in the 2017 season.
Lauren Karinshak began the season with the second longest scoreless streak by a keeper at Georgia Southern with 340:57 minutes. Following her clean-sheet against Coastal Carolina, Karinshak was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
The keepers are also taking advantage of their back line playing well.
Lauren Karinshak not only posted the second longest scoreless streak in program history, but she has already posted four clean-sheets on the season and has five for her career. Last season the Eagles had one clean-sheet all year, coming September 25
th in a 1-0 victory over Texas State. In 2017 the Eagles posted four clean-sheets before September 25
th, quadrupling the total from last season with eight games still remaining.
The Blue and White will host South Alabama Friday evening at 7:00 PM and Arkansas State, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM.
