Volleyball Falls in Four at Chattanooga
UTC moves to 15-11 overall and 10-3 in the Southern Conference. GSU drops to 8-17 and 5-8.
Game one was all Chattanooga. The Lady Mocs held the Eagles to a -.023 hitting percentage and used a 6-1 run to break open a two-point game.
GSU rebounded in game two. The two teams battled to a 23-23 tie as neither squad led by more than two. Senior Bailey Coleman’s (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) service run keyed a 7-0 rally and the Eagles forced attacking errors on four straight plays, getting three blocks from senior Gorana Bacic (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Christina Raiford (Duluth, Ga.).
The close play continued into the third frame and Chattanooga broke a 14-14 tie with a 9-1 run en route to a 2-1 lead.
Georgia Southern stormed out to a 12-4 lead in game four but Chattanooga answered with another 9-1 rally to tie the game at 13-13.
The teams traded leads four times through a 24-24 tie before the Lady Mocs went up by two, 29-27. A kill by Dowd helped stave off two match points, but a block by Jamie Engel and Leslee Ball finished off the Eagles 31-29.
Ball finished with a match-high 24 kills and a .435 attack percentage. She also added 13 digs and four blocks. Lara Newberry totaled 26 kills and Bailee Chastain added 56 assists.
Bacic recorded 17 kills and seven blocks. Junior Mae Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) had 46 assists and Coleman tallied 29 digs.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow with a match at Western Carolina, which is set to begin at 2 p.m.
