Volleyball Prepares for Pair of SoCon Road Contests
Georgia Southern faces College of Charleston Friday at 7 p.m. and The Citadel Saturday, also at 7 p.m.
The Eagles have won 27 of their last 34 sets during their current nine-match win streak and four Eagles boast over 100 kills on the season led by junior outside hitter Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.). Sanford averages 3.61 kills per set and ranks second in the league behind College of Charleston’s Whitney Russell, who sports a 3.66 kills per set average. Sophomore Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) fuels the Eagle attack averaging 10.27 assists per set. Meanwhile, junior Ashley Roe (Campbell, Calif.) anchors the defense with a 4.03 digs per set average.
College of Charleston enters Friday’s matchup with a 14-5 overall mark and 3-1 league record with its only loss to Furman, 3-2, last Saturday. The Furman loss snapped a seven-match win streak by the Cougars who have already picked up conference wins over The Citadel, Western Carolina and Wofford. Russell leads the attack, while Cole Dawley dishes out 9.76 assists per set on average to lead the team. With a 3.80 digs per set average, Paige Johnson carries the team in the back court.
The Eagles and Cougars will meet for the 41st time Friday night with the Cougars owning a 30-10 all-time series advantage over the Eagles. Georgia Southern and College of Charleston split matches last season with each school taking their respective home matches. The Eagles defeated the Cougars by a score of 3-2 in Hanner Fieldhouse before falling 3-2 in Carolina First Arena.
The Citadel (5-14, 0-4) looks to halt a six-match losing streak facing Georgia Southern on Saturday. The Bulldogs are coming off a 3-1 loss to Wofford last weekend. Tatum Jestila leads the Bulldog offense with a 2.59 kills per set average and a 3.38 digs per set average. Erin Bucherl and Alexa Dahlstrom have 4.83 and 4.70 assists per set averages.
Georgia Southern owns a 23-0 all-time series advantage over The Citadel.
