Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) registered eight kills to lead the Eagle offense that collected 35 kills and recorded a .281 hitting percentage. A second set 25-18 win put Georgia Southern on top 2-0 in the match. The Eagles used 12 kills and two blocks to capture the set. Hannah Nelson (Norcross, Ga.) posted four kills and helped Georgia Southern hold SCSU to a .077 hitting percentage. Georgia Southern took its final lead of the set at 2-1 and led by as many as nine points in the frame.
The third set witnessed the most competitive action with two lead changes and three tied scores. The Bulldogs held the lead the majority of the match, jumping out to a 9-3 advantage. Georgia Southern climbed back, knotting the score at 18-18 and closed the set on a 9-1 run to claim the match with a 25-19 third set win. Small led with four kills in the frame.
“We tried to get a couple new faces on the court this evening to get them some experience and have them feel a little more comfortable should we need to rely on them later down the road,” said Head Coach Chad Callihan. “Anytime you make some changes, you’ll lose a little chemistry and it just took us a second to get things going. I give credit to South Carolina State, they did some nice things in the third set.”
Georgia Southern returns to the court and Southern Conference play welcoming Chattanooga Saturday, October 2, at 6 p.m.
